Duties
You will perform developmental assignments under close supervision. Assignments become progressively more difficult until the full performance level is reached. At the full-performance level you will be responsible for:
Providing technical, operational, and instructional support for all civil engineering laboratories.
Testing laboratory equipment before instruction to ensure it is fully operational, recording data, and collaborating with faculty to develop variations of procedures to determine the best practice.
Preparing laboratory samples and specimens before instruction as required by the faculty.
Consulting and assisting cadet-led design, construction, and research projects and experiments by providing expertise in design and fabrication.
Determining utility resource requirements necessary for laboratory and demonstration support.
Ensuring all facility areas assigned meet all fire and safety regulatory standards set forth by department policy.
Maintaining accountability of all items assigned to department property book.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 80 pounds in the regular performance of duties.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a two year trial period.
Qualifications
Who May Apply: Positions are open to:
Recent graduates who have completed, within the previous two years, a qualifying associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution. Short-term training programs (e.g. several two-week programs completed) are not considered an academic course of study.
Current students who will graduate no later than May 31, 2024.
Preference eligible veterans who were precluded from applying due to their military service obligation begin their two-year eligibility period upon release or discharge from active duty. Eligibility for these veterans cannot exceed six years after degree or certificate completion.
Applicants can be selected at either the GS-07 or GS-08. The target grade of this position is GS-09.
After Program completion, Department of the Army Recent Graduates MAY be converted to a permanent position or to a term position (a project-based term of employment lasting between one and four years).
To be eligible for conversion to a permanent or term position, Recent Graduates must:
Be a U.S. Citizen
Successfully complete all the requirements of the Recent Graduate Program as defined in the Agency Participant Agreement.
Demonstrate successful job performance.
Meet the Office of Personnel Management qualification standard including any applicable positive education requirements and/or selection placement factors and any other designated special qualifications requirements and conditions of employment (e.g. medical standards) appropriate for the position to which being converted.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). GS-07:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) maintaining work area, tools, and/or equipment; or 2) maintaining accountability of items assigned to an organization. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Engineering, Physical Science, Mathematics, or another related field of study.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
GS-08:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) assisting with maintaining work areas, tools, and/or equipment for a laboratory, research, testing, or other related facility; 2) maintaining accountability of specialized items assigned to an organization; 3) performing routine maintenance on tools and/or equipment; or 4) inspecting and/or testing equipment and/or materials. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Engineering, Physical Science, Mathematics, or another related field of study.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.
