Duties

This position is located in the Office of Enforcement Programs and Services (EPS), National Tracing Center Division (NTC), Firearms Tracing Branch, in Martinsburg, WV. The incumbent serves as a Firearms Program Specialist in one of the following groups: Firearms Active Distribution, Research, Firearms Services or Comprehensive Tracing. The NTC provides 24-hour assistance to Federal, State, local and foreign law enforcement agencies and is an essential component to investigations involving the criminal misuse of firearms. As a Firearms Program Specialist, GS-1801-05, your typical work assignments may include:

Qualifications

To qualify for the position of Firearms Program Specialist, GS-1801-05, candidates MUST have at least three years of progressively responsible experience, one year of which must be equivalent to the next lower grade level, GS-04. General experience includes: Analyzing data from computer generated reports; and Planning and organizing work; and Communicating, both orally and in writing. OR Completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree OR A combination of general experience as stated above and education. To qualify for the position of Firearms Program Specialist, GS-1801-07, candidates MUST have one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, GS-05. Specialized Experience is demonstrated experience, which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. Experience must be in the normal line of progression or must be related to the work of the position advertised and must be reflected in the resume. Specialized experience includes: Applying knowledge of firearms, firearms manufacturer dealers, importers, related weapons and information in order to perform trace requests; and Applying basic fact-finding and investigative techniques to gather evidence, analyze information, conduct interviews, and research data; and Using databases to complete traces, identify trends, search for patterns and generate reports; and Providing technical advice in order to analyze basic firearms tracing problems and respond to inquiries. OR Successful completion of one full year of graduate level education OR meet the requirements for superior academic achievement. Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.). S.A.A. is based on (1) class standing--upper third of the graduating class, (2) grade-point average--3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, or (3) membership in a national scholastic honor society. OR A combination of specialized experience as stated above and graduate level education. To qualify for the position of Firearms Program Specialist, GS-1801-09, candidates MUST have one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, GS-07. Specialized Experience is demonstrated experience, which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. Experience must be in the normal line of progression or must be related to the work of the position advertised and must be reflected in the resume. Specialized experience includes: Carrying out recurring assignments independently that are covered by established procedures; and Assisting on deviations, problems and unfamiliar situations that may arise; and Reviewing technical accuracy adherence to standard procedures and compliance with any special situation; and Analyzing data and trace reports. OR A Master's or equivalent graduate degree. OR Two full years of progressively higher-level education leading to such a degree. OR A combination of specialized experience as stated above and graduate level education.
