This position is part of the Plant Operations,Government Publishing Office inWashington , District of Columbia.
Duties
Provides technical training to apprentices for duration of apprentice program.
Records weekly activities of apprentices assigned to his/her section. Records include information about equipment operated and signature verification by appropriate officials.
Monitors progress of apprentices and provides input regarding performance ratings.
Identifies and researches training opportunities for journeypersons.
Proofreads both straight and tabular matter to detect and mark all typographical, spelling, and style errors using standard proofreader marks.
Manipulates files and extensions in the database to make corrections and updates.
Revises galley corrections and page proofs manually and electronically.
Requirements
- You must be a current Career or Career Conditional GPO employee to apply.
- Selectees must pass a physical examination prior to appointment.
- Strength test may be required.
- Males born after 12/03/59 must be registered for Selective Service.
- stretching, reaching above the shoulder, and climbing. A moderate amount of hand, wrist, and arm movements is involved.
- Physical Effort - Duties may require prolonged standing, walking, stooping, bending, stretching and reaching above the shoulder.
- Working Conditions: Duties are performed in a well-lighted, heated and ventilated area.
- Working Conditions: Some duties will be performed in an office setting, most duties will be performed in a production environment where there is exposure to moving mechanical parts, noise, odors/fumes, and dust.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following SCREEN OUT/ Job Element 46: Ability to Instruct to be considered eligible for the position. Applicant must have experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to independently perform the duties typically required of the position of a Craft Training Representative (Keyboard/Proof), KI-4403-00. These duties include providing technical training to apprentices, KI-4403-02 and recording weekly activities; identifying and coordinating training; monitoring progress of apprentices; identifying and researching training opportunities to keep up to industry standards; proofreading both straight and tabular matter to detect and mark all typographical, spelling, a style errors; keyboarding coded manuscript copy; manipulating files and extensions in the database to make corrections and updates; revising galley corrections and page proofs and utilizing SGML, XML, and associated programs.
To qualify for the position, you must meet the following requirements: Applicants must have experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to independently perform the duties typically required of a Craft Training Representative (Keyboard/Proof). These duties require skill in recording weekly activities; identifying and coordinating training; monitoring progress of apprentices; identifying and researching training opportunities to keep up to industry standards; proofreading both straight and tabular matter to detect and mark all typographical, spelling, a style errors; keyboarding coded manuscript copy; manipulating files and extensions in the database to make corrections and updates; revising galley corrections and page proofs and utilizing SGML, XML, and associated programs.

In addition to the requirements above, GPO employees competing under merit promotion procedures must meet all of the following criteria in accordance with Federal Merit Promotion Plan, GPO Instruction 615.2C (Appendix B): 1. Have completed a formal, recognized apprenticeship or GPO journeyperson training program, or possess substantially equivalent practical experience in the trade of the vacancy; AND 2. Have at least 1 year of journeyperson experience subsequent to completion of the above apprenticeship or training; AND 3. Have served a minimum of 1 year in Career or Career-Conditional appointment in the GPO. OR 4. Have served at least 1 year in an administrative or supervisory capacity related to the work of the position/ series: Proofreader/KeyBoarder-Hand Composing. .

Substitution of education in lieu of specialized experience may not be used for this grade level.
