Duties
Performs initial editing and saves to locator function of XML files.
Troubleshoots and effectively processes work with an understanding of Bill End production priorities.
Distributes and reviews the work of proofreaders, checking the galleys returned by proofreaders or revised by the readers, and making additional marks when errors are detected or when coding changes are needed to effect desired results.
Answer queries on galley proofs when possible and verifies marks to be carried on proofs, to the department, if necessary.
Performs collating, stamping, and logging-in of work.
Requirements
- You must be a current Career or Career Conditional GPO employee to apply.
- Selectees must pass a physical examination prior to appointment.
- Strength test may be required.
- Time in Grade requirements must be met.
- Selectee may be requiremed to serve a one-year probationary period.

- Physical - Effort: Duties require prolonged standing, walking, stooping, bending, stretching, reaching above the shoulder, and climbing. A moderate amount of hand, wrist, and arm movements is involved.
- Physical - Effort: Duties require Moderate lifting is required for objects weighing up to 80 pounds. Incumbent is required to have good eye-hand coordination and proficient vision.
- Working Conditions: Duties are performed in a well-lighted, heated and ventilated area.
- Working Conditions: The incumbent is exposed to low frequency noise generated by bindery equipment. The work is performed indoors, with no exposure to excessive heat or cold.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following Screen-Out element (Job Element #1), to be considered for this position. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen-out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the online questionnaire. If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT ELEMENT below is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration. The screen-out element for this position is:
Ability to do the work of a Head Desk Person without more than normal supervision.
Applicants must also have:
(1) completed a formal, recognized apprenticeship or GPO journeyperson training program, or possess substantially equivalent practical experience in the trade of the vacant position.
(2) at least 1 year of journeyperson experience subsequent to completion of the above apprenticeship or training.
(3) Applicant must be able to perform the full scope of a Prepress Journeyperson without normal supervision.
In addition to the requirements above, GPO employees competing under merit promotion procedures must meet all of the following criteria in accordance with Federal Merit Promotion Plan, GPO Instruction 615.2C (Appendix B): 1. Have completed a formal, recognized apprenticeship or GPO journeyperson training program, or possess substantially equivalent practical experience in the trade of the vacancy; AND 2. Have at least 1 year of journeyperson experience subsequent to completion of the above apprenticeship or training; AND 3. Have served a minimum of 1 year in Career or Career-Conditional appointment in the GPO.(add supervisory statement from MP Plan). 4. Have served at least 1 year in an administrative or supervisory capacity.
OR
1) Have obtained a Baccalaureate Degree or three years of responsible experience in the printing industry equivalent, at a minimum, to the GPO journeyperson level, 2) Have two years of experience in the printing industry of a scope and quality sufficient to carry out the duties of the position - one year of which was at or comparable to the PG-12 level, AND 3) Have served a minimum of one year in a career or career-conditional appointment in GPO.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education
Substitution of education in lieu of specialized experience may not be used for this grade level.
