This position is located in the Wildlife and Marine Resources Section, Washington, D.C. The incumbent will provide a variety of administrative and clerical support to attorneys. If selected, you may be able to work full-time if your class schedule allows.
Student Pathways Program:
This is a Student Internship opportunity that provides students enrolled in a qualifying educational institution with paid opportunities to work in Federal agencies while completing their education.
Duties
Who May Apply: Applicants must be CURRENT students in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional; technical, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree program; or other qualifying education institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.
Student Pathways Program: This is a Student Internship opportunity that provides students enrolled in a qualifying educational institution with paid opportunities to work in Federal agencies while completing their education. This is a part-time position, but students can work a full-time tour as their school schedule allows. Expected date of graduation must occur after September 2024.
As a Student Trainee, your typical work assignments may include the following:
Use office automation software and equipment to type, edit, and format letters, memoranda, reports, technical documents, charts, graphs, and/or forms.
Facilitate the exchange of information between attorney, paralegal, and litigation support staff.
Organize meetings for attorneys (including arranging the time and place), arrange conference calls, reserve conference rooms, and ensure that equipment for the conference room is in place and working.
Receive incoming telephone calls and visitors.
Answer inquiries related to general policy, programs, and activities of the office.
Receive, sort, and route incoming mail and correspondence to office staff.
Assist in closing cases by purging duplicate documents, ensuring that relevant documents are included with the case file, and preparing an index of the file contents.
Send, receive, distribute electronic mail and fax documents; prepare Federal Express mailings; and operate office photocopiers and scanners.
Requirements
- You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- You must complete a background investigation to include drug testing.
- Selective Service Registration is required, as applicable.
- You must maintain a bank account for direct deposit of salary.
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Must meet Student Intern Program requirements.
- Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a degree-seeking student.
- Must have typing proficiency.
- If this is your first appointment in the Federal service, your salary will be set at Step 1 of the grade selected.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, candidates must meet the program requirements, qualification requirements, and typing proficiency listed below.
Program Requirements: Be enrolled or formally accepted for enrollment as a full-time or part-time student into an accredited college or university* in a degree seeking program or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate. (See Education Requirements)
Must be in good academic standing and maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA).
If selected, must sign Student Pathways program agreement; furnish course registration information at the start of each school term; and provide verification of academic status (transcript) at the end of each academic term.
Must be able to complete required occupation related work experience (640 hours) prior to or concurrently with the completion of course requirements for the degree.
This position MAY be eligible for conversion to the competitive service. Conversion is not guaranteed and is subject to budgetary limitations and management approval.
Qualification Requirements:
In addition to the program requirements listed above, candidates must meet the minimum education or experience requirements to qualify for the 0399 series at the grade levels below:
GS-4: MUST have completed 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate degree, or l year of general experience. General experience is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be qualifying. An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university.
GS-5: MUST have completed 4 years of education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education was obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university; or must have one year of specialized experience at, or equivalent to, the GS-4 Federal grade level completing a variety of office work to include: conducting research, compiling and updating data, preparing correspondence, opening and distributing mail, providing customer service support by answering telephones calls and receiving visitors. This experience must include preparing correspondence and administrative forms using proper format, grammar, punctuation, and spelling; or must have a combination of specialized experience and post high school education described above. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours beyond the second year) is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.
Typing Proficiency: Applicants must be able to type 40 words per minute. You must self-certify your typing skill on the occupational/assessment questionnaire and your resume.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skill and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
