The United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York's mission is to investigate, prosecute and deter violations of federal statutes, enforce and represent the interests of the United States in civil litigation, uphold civil, constitutional and victims' rights, and foster partnerships with other federal, state and local government agencies and community groups.
Duties
This Victim Witness Assistant (OA) serves as the primary technician and administrative support in the area of the district's Victim-Witness (VW) program.
If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing Victim Witness Assistant (OA) support in the U.S. Attorney's Office, Eastern District of New York, located in Brooklyn, New York, focusing in the areas of victim witness assistance; and office automation.
Typical work assignments will include:
Provides information to victims on schedule changes, status of defendant's pleas, results of trial.
Responds to victim inquiries in writing, telephonically, or in person.
Maintains a calendar of active victim cases, which includes keeping track of hearings, trial dates, and sentencing dates.
Inputs victim data into applicable database(s).
Coordinates the mailing of victim-witness notifications letters.
Requirements
- You must be a United States Citizen or National to apply for this position.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience for the respective grade level in which you are applying:
To qualify at the GS-08 level, you must possess:
Specialized Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service performing (obtained in either the public or private sectors) the duties listed below:
Assisting with responding to inquiries from attorneys, clerk of courts, victims, witnesses, and/or probations staff;
Utilizing office automation to produce and prepare legal correspondence or data reports; AND
Preparing travel requests in accordance with travel guidelines, policies, and regulations.
Typing Proficiency: To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.)

TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENTS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-07is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-08 level.
You must submit your SF-50 that shows Time-in-Grade eligibility and reflects your title, series, and grade. No award SF-50 will be accepted; recommended SF-50s include promotions and step increases (within grade increases).
