About the Position: Serves as the Chief Adjudicator in the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, Claims Division responsible for the daily direction, investigation and administration of claims adjudication from the initial process of filing and logging in to final administrative disposition.
Duties
Serve as the Chief Adjudicator in the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, Claims Division responsible for the daily direction, investigation, and administration of the claims adjudication process.
Investigate or direct the investigation of claims, especially extraordinarily complex claims for property damage or personal injury, including multi-million-dollar medical malpractice claims.
Evaluate claims for the factual and legal sufficiency of the evidence submitted; the plan for the additional development of necessary and unsubmitted evidence and the applicable quantum and amount.
Provide technical supervision and expertise to paralegals and other lower graded employees within the Legal Assistance Division.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Required to serve a one-year supervisory probationary period if not already served.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service which includes experience aiding with attorneys by conducting pretrial case analysis; preparing legal memoranda, motions and briefs; maintaining and compiling case or client data; and assisting with client and witness interviews.
OR
Education: Ph. D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M. in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position. OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).
