This vacancy is for a Statistician (Demography) position in the International Programs Center located at the U.S. Census Bureau Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland. The Census Bureau is accessible from the Metro Rail Green Line - Suitland Station.
This Job Opportunity Announcement may be used to fill other Statistician (Demography), 1530, 9, FPL GS-12 positions within the Census Bureau in the same geographical location with the same qualifications and specialized experience.
Duties
Evaluates and analyzes census and survey data from international sources using statistical programming languages such as R, Python, or SQL.
Produces population estimates and projections for other countries and areas of the world, including studies of international fertility, mortality, and migration trends.
Conducts research on demographic, health, economic, and/or data science topics.
Provides technical assistance and training to low and middle income national statistical offices.
Develops written materials and other products for public dissemination on statistical concepts.
Makes recommendations on appropriate methodologies and project direction.

Qualifications

Minimum Education Requirement:
Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.
OR
Combination of education and experience - courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.
AND
Specialized Experience: For the GS-09, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-07 in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes working with survey and research methodologies; assisting with statistical programming and modeling; assisting with writing and communicating technical knowledge related to survey statistics, demography, gender statistics, etc.; traveling to low- and middle-income countries to teach and work.
OR
Education: 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
