This vacancy is for a Statistician (Demography) position in the International Programs Center located at the U.S. Census Bureau Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland. This Job Opportunity Announcement may be used to fill other Statistician (Demography), 1530, 11/12, FPL GS-12 positions within the Census Bureau in the same geographical location with the same qualifications and specialized experience.

Duties

Evaluates and analyzes census and survey data from international sources using statistical programming languages such as R, Python, or SQL. Produces population estimates and projections for other countries and areas of the world, including studies of international fertility, mortality, and migration trends. Conducts research on demographic, health, economic, and/or data science topics. Provides technical assistance and training to low and middle income national statistical offices. Develops written materials and other products for public dissemination on statistical concepts Makes recommendations on appropriate methodologies and project direction. Leads international statistical projects in languages such as English, French, Spanish, or Arabic.

Qualifications

Minimum Education Requirement: Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. AND Specialized Experience: For the GS-11, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-09 in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes: evaluating survey and research methodologies; working with statistical programming and modeling; writing and communicating technical knowledge related to survey statistics, demography, gender statistics, etc; working in teams and completing projects on time; traveling to low- and middle-income countries to teach and work. OR Education: 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree For the GS-12, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes Experience with evaluating and recommending survey and research methodologies; working with statistical programming and modeling; writing and communicating technical knowledge related to survey statistics, demography, gender statistics, etc.; leading teams and completing projects on time; traveling to low- and middle-income countries to teach and work. Education: Cannot be substituted at the GS-12 grade level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer.
