Job opening: Physicist
Salary: $78 592 - 122 459 per year
Published at: Sep 08 2023
Employment Type: Full-time
NIST works with industry and science to advance innovation and improve quality of life. We're looking for a Physicist to join our team!
This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.
Duties
You will be part of a program to develop new nanophotonic and optomechanical devices for precision measurement in positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) applications. Representative device technologies including microresonator optical parametric oscillators, microresonator frequency combs, and optomechanical resonators. You will provide design analysis on these devices to maximize performance, develop theoretical models of these devices that will be used to better understand their underlying physics, and will characterize these devices using optical spectral analysis and phase and frequency noise measurements, among other laser readout methods. You will be expected to interact with NIST staff and external stakeholders and develop external collaborations with leading scientists to identify the best methods for achieving the highest performance. You will be expected to help build and maintain a world-class experimental facility for PNT measurements and to disseminate the results of this work through publications and conference presentations.
Requirements
- U.S. citizenship
- Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
A. Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.
In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must also have 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 (ZP-II at NIST) level. Specialized Experience is defined as: working on nonlinear nanophotonics devices including microresonator optical parametric oscillators and microresonator frequency combs. Applicant should have at least 1 year of specialized experience in optical frequency metrology, including frequency noise characterization and optical frequency division.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done. We will credit all qualifying volunteer experience in your application.
The qualification requirements in this vacancy announcement are based on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook.
