The Motor Vehicle Operator will be assigned to the Transportation Service located at the Jesse Brown Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Chicago, IL. The purpose of this position is to provide patient transportation between hospitals and the associated outpatient clinics.
Duties
Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:
Operates gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of less than 25,000 pounds to transport passengers between the main hospital and its associated outpatient clinics.
Operates other vehicle types such as: passenger cars, vans, station wagons, cargo van, stake truck, and a dump truck. Vehicles are driven in and out of state, over roads and streets, through all kinds of traffic and weather conditions.
Operates doors and wheelchair lift to allow patients and staff to enter and leave the bus.
Assists nursing service personnel with loading and unloading of patients in wheelchairs and assures that patients are secured on the bus before departing from the station.
Ensures that patients and cargo are properly secured.
Performs vehicle maintenance which includes checking tires and tire pressure, battery condition, cooling system level, oil level, fuel level, and fluid in power steering unit, brake fluid, all lights, and checks for and reports any physical damage before using the vehicles.
Performs other duties as necessary.
Work Schedule: Full Time, 5:00am to 1:30pm, 10:00pm to 6:30pm, 2:00pm to 10:30pm - Shift to be discuss at interview.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Great physical effort is needed to maneuver the longer and heavier vehicles especially when backing these vehicles. Assists patients with limited mobility into and out of the patient transport vehicle which may involve physical exertion, stooping, and bending.
Employee will work mostly outside and operates vehicles in all weather conditions and heavy traffic. Will be exposed to dirt, fumes, and incurs a possibility of injury while driving or when loading/unloading vehicles. Work is carried out on public highways and Interstate highway systems, on complicated roads and interchange systems as well as on medical center grounds. May be required to maneuver through and park in areas with limited space, restricted heights, and congested areas.
