This position is located at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, Chicago, IL.(537) - a Level 1b Complexity VHA Facility and is organizationally aligned under the Veteran Transportation Services Section. The purpose of this position is to act as supervisor over the motor vehicle operators of the section who are responsible for operating motor vehicles to include patient transport between hospitals.

Duties

Plans, directs, coordinates, and supervises the work of 11 Motor Vehicle Operators rated WG-6 and WG-7. Supervises employees to accomplish a wide range of similar tasks, including motor gasoline/diesel fuel service station operations, on and off-station patient transport, and motor vehicle operator maintenance and repair. Responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of assigned vehicles and equipment, including trucks, large wheelchair-accessible buses, and medium to heavy-duty straight trucks, capable of a variety of body configurations with attached/towed equipment, and wheelchair lifts for patient transport vehicles.. Accounts for the quantity and quality of the work accomplished by the group; Incumbent must exercise independent judgment and initiative in ensuring the efficient, economical and timely completion of work assignments within general guidelines and schedules established by higher levels of supervision. Manages the Maintenance, and Care of Equipment, Safety, Scheduling, Communications, Training and other significant Duties (e.g., number of vehicles, kinds of vehicles). Serves as a First level supervisor and has decision authority over the fleet operations section which is established as a distinct work function. Makes routine decisions on executing policy established by the next higher level. Maintains balanced workload, Supervisor decides work assignments and how they are completed. Directs work of subordinates in providing the motor vehicle operator services in one related occupation. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/08/2024. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work is primarily performed outdoors, and is regularly exposed to extremes of temperature, inclement weather, rain and snow. In addition to the physical effort described drivers at this level exert moderate physical effort in operating, turning, backing, and controlling vehicles which carry heavier loads or larger numbers of people than vehicles at the grade 6 level. These actions are necessary to control vehicles and equipment, and occasionally to lift heavy items of up to 50 lbs. Individual assists loading and unloading patients from the transport.
