The position is located at the Veterans Administration Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). VAPAHCS consists of three inpatient facilities located at Palo Alto, CA. The position is under the direct supervision of the Housekeeping Aid Supervisor of the Unit to which he/she is assigned.
Duties
The position functions as a Housekeeping Aid Work Leader assigned to one of the Sanitation Units at Palo Alto, Menlo Park, or Livermore and is under the direct supervision of the Housekeeping Aid Supervisor of the Unit to which he/she is assigned. He/she performs a full range of sanitation activities and leads staff assigned to him. If assigned to a tour of duty that includes the weekend or swing shift, he/she will work and lead independently with general instruction provided beforehand by his/her Housekeeping Aid Supervisor. The position is assigned to one of the Sanitation Units of the Environmental Management Service (EMS).Major duties include, but are not limited, to:
Takes the lead on projects and works within a team to set the pace of his assigned team members to get the job done.
Constantly adjusts work schedules to handle emergencies that arise.
Is thoroughly familiar with power equipment such as floor machines, vacuums, auto scrubbers, battery powered trucks, and carpet shampoo machines.
Is able to perform the same type of work as Housekeeping Aid, WG-2, which includes a full range of sanitation cleaning in any assigned area.
Leads an assigned group of 2-4 team members, in addition to the work of an assigned 4-8 CWT Program patients.
Follows oral and written instructions which may be in broad and general terms, Passes on to assigned team workers instructions received from supervisor, demonstrates proper work methods, and starts team work.
Ensures that needed plans, material, and equipment are available, and needed stock is obtained from supply locations.
Works along with team members while setting the pace for the team, performing non-supervisory work of the same kind and level as that done by his/her assigned team members as necessary.
Adjusts team work schedules constantly to handle emergencies that arise.
Checks team's work while in progress and when finished, to see whether the supervisor's instructions and sanitations standards and goals have been met.
Ensures assigned housekeeping equipment is properly cleaned and stored after job completion and team use.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Duties require constant physical demands such as bending, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, and reaching. Incumbent must climb ladders to clean overhead equipment and operate heavy duty commercial cleaning equipment that requires eye, hand and body coordination.
Works indoors in areas which normally have heat, light and ventilation, but is required to frequently transport trash to loading dock and be exposed to weather elements. Personal Protective Equipment must be worn in areas required (cap, scrubs, gloves, mask, etc.). He/she may work around areas utilizing high pressure combustible gases, noises and electrical equipment. Incumbent may be exposed to patients having contagious diseases and an environment conductive to nosocomial infections. He/she may be exposed to odors from patients and disinfectants (i.e., water in washing and scrubbing, dirt, excreta, vomitus, drainage); May be exposed to irritations/cleaning agents; and may be exposed to unsightly items such as, soiled linens which are bloodied or stained.
