This position is located at the Veterans Administration Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). The VAPAHCS consists of three inpatient facilities located at Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Livermore, plus seven outpatient clinics in San Jose, Capitola, Monterey, Stockton, Modesto, Sonora, and Fremont. The position functions as a Housekeeping Aid Supervisor assigned to one of the Sanitation Units at Palo Alto, Menlo Park, or Livermore, as part of the Environmental Management Service (EMS).

Duties

The position directly supervises and provides administrative support to the unit to which he/she has been assigned. The Housekeeping Aid supervisor has knowledge and understanding of the full range of sanitation operations, and is under the direct supervision of the Environmental of Care (EOC) Specialist to which his or her unit is assigned and under indirect supervision of the Assistant Chief and/or Chief of EMS.Major duties include, but are not limited, to: Works independently in performing the duties of the position but keeps the supervisor informed of unusual events and the overall condition of the areas to which he/she supervise. Receives from the EOC, written and oral instructions regarding special assignments, policy changes, and any other changes, which affect the operations. Passes information and directions to his/her subordinates. The Housekeeping Supervisor's work is checked occasionally for adequacy and compliance to established standards of quality and quantity of work performed. Plans the work assignment distribution and methods of accomplishment of assigned staff and adjusts efforts based on resources needed to provide uninterrupted service. Comprehends the overall mission of the Medical Center and component services in order to intelligently discuss, resolve problems and coordinate activities of the sanitation unit to which he/she supervises with other hospital services which may be affected by his/her unit's activities. Provides input to discussions, which have a direct or indirect impact on the work accomplishments of EMS. Ensures that there is an adequate amount of supplies and materials available for issue to assigned staff. Evaluates new products and reports the findings to his/her immediate supervisor. Equipment requiring repairs or replacement are promptly reported so as not to interfere with the mission of the service. May be requested to perform other related duties as assigned based on the needs of the Service; Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 6:00am - 2:30pm

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work performed may require continuous walking, standing, stooping, stretching and lifting. Manual effort may be necessary during training sessions or in emergency situations. The incumbent will work normally inside in well lighted, heated or ventilated areas. He/she may be exposed to contagion and possible infection, loud noises, bruises, minor shock and other injuries.
