The organizational location of this position is: Maintenance Mechanic, Pipe and Maintenance Shop, Engineering Service, Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center, Indianapolis, IN. The primary purpose of this position is: to serve as a Maintenance Mechanic and provide full performance, journeyman-level work in minor tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, structure, fixtures, and utilities.

Duties

Major duties include but are not limited to: Welder Duties include: Using a variety of welding processes such as oxyacetylene, electrode arc, submerged arc, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, metal spray arc, and spot and stud welding to join all types of common metals and alloys. Welds structures, plates, sheet metal, castings, forgings, pipes, boilers, shafts, turbines, valves, caissons, tanks, and/or other comparable material, parts, equipment, and machinery. Pipefitter Duties include: Installs, modifies, and repairs new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam heating, steam generation, and hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, and circulating pumps, and radiators. Measures and determines proper piping, valves, and fittings required for the job; insulates pipes; and measures required cuts, threads, reams, etc. Cuts route openings; places hangers for correct pitch and elevation; and installs braces and supports. Maintains records and documents actions. Plumbing Maintenance Duties include: Independently installs, modifies, repairs, and maintains a variety of new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems, and water closets, tubs, backflow prevention devices/assemblies, fire sprinkler systems, and showers. Plans and ensures the proper slant, slope, fall, or level of installations to provide for proper flow, drainage, and sanitary operating conditions and to prevent backflow vacuum, or air lock conditions. Determines tools, parts, equipment, and supplies needed, including proper types, sizes, and materials. Improvises installations when blueprints and sketches do not provide sufficient information. Troubleshoots/tests various plumbing systems and equipment including backflow prevention devices such as reduced pressure principal devices, double check devices, atmospheric vacuum breakers, and other cross connection devices. Motor Vehicle Operator duties includes: Drives one or more types of light trucks, such as pickup trucks, panel trucks, and flatbed trucks to transport supplies, materials, and equipment. Personally, performs or oversees loading and unloading of vehicles by hand (with or without assistance) including arranging, securing, and protecting cargo to prevent shifting, loss, or damage while in transit. Performs operator maintenance, such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires, cleaning and washing of vehicles, and performing inspection checklists to ensure safe and proper operation. Laborer Work duties include: Loads, unloads, separates, stacks, and carries materials, supplies, and packages weighing from 80 to 100 pounds (36 to 45 kilograms) or more. May use hand trucks or dollies. May lift, move, and carry very heavy objects such as heavy furniture, equipment, supplies, etc., through confined spaces. Helper work duties include: Under close supervision and monitoring, may perform as helper in tasks assisting higher level personnel and learn how to perform duties of trades such as: sheet metal mechanic, air conditioning mechanic, mason, electrician, painting, carpentry, pest control, machinist, and/or high voltage electrician. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations to maintain a safe and clean work environment. Work Schedule: Mon - Fri 7:00-3:30pm; Negotiable Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic (Pipe Shop)/PD918370 Physical Requirements: The Maintenance Mechanic, working with the various trades, makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the parts of systems worked on are in hard-to-reach places. This requires him to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The Maintenance Mechanic frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, they lift or move with assistance moderately heavy objects weighing more than 75 pounds. When at a job site, strenuous physical exertion is sometimes required when handling heavy and bulky materials such as sheet of plywood, framing members, piping, conducts and other building and construction materials. Some trades mentioned above use manual or portable power tools for extended periods in uncomfortable positions. Also, will be required to wear asbestos suits and respirators while removing asbestos.
