The primary purpose of this position is: to serve as a Maintenance Mechanic and provide full performance, journeyman-level work in minor tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, structure, fixtures, and utilities. An assigned duty typically consists of a visual examination of an issue, determining the need by doing operational testing and performing repair work on a level of difficulty and responsibility, knowledge, competency of trades such as: welding, pipefitting, and plumbing maintenance.

Duties

The incumbent uses a variety of welding processes such as oxyacetylene, electrode arc, submerged arc, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, metal spray arc, and spot and stud welding to join all types of common metals and alloys. Welds structures, plates, sheet metal, castings, forgings, pipes, boilers, shafts, turbines, valves, caissons, tanks, and/or other comparable material, parts, equipment, and machinery. Installs, modifies, and repairs new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam heating, steam generation, and hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, and circulating pumps, and radiators. Measures and determines proper piping, valves, and fittings required for the job; insulates pipes; and measures required cuts, threads, reams, etc. Independently installs, modifies, repairs, and maintains a variety of new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems, and water closets, tubs, backflow prevention devices/assemblies, fire sprinkler systems, and showers. Drives one or more types of light trucks, such as pickup trucks, panel trucks, and flatbed trucks to transport supplies, materials, and equipment. Loads, unloads, separates, stacks, and carries materials, supplies, and packages weighing from 80 to 100 pounds (36 to 45 kilograms) or more. Under close supervision and monitoring, may perform as helper in tasks assisting higher level personnel and learn how to perform duties of trades such as: sheet metal mechanic, air conditioning mechanic, mason, electrician, painting, carpentry, pest control, machinist, and/or high voltage electrician. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Physical Requirements: The Maintenance Mechanic, working with the various trades, makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the parts of systems worked on are in hard-to-reach places. This requires him to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The Maintenance Mechanic frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, they lift or move with assistance moderately heavy objects weighing more than 75 pounds. Working Conditions: This position may require working in uncontrolled environments, confined spaces, from ladders and rooftops, during normal duty hours or overtime. Incumbent shall be subjected to the hazards normally encountered in the trade and various types of infections. Some work is performed in shop areas where the worker is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, particulates in the air, glue fumes, and hazards associated with heating/cooling and other related power equipment. At times, the Maintenance Mechanic is frequently subject to sudden temperature changes when working on equipment such as walk-in freezers units. The incumbent is occasionally subject to cuts, burns, electrical shocks, and respiratory ailments. Exposure to repeated, prolonged, or concentrated amounts of refrigerant gases may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin, and internal organs. Incumbent may be required to make repairs and installations in inclement weather.
