This position is located at the Lexington, Kentucky, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical facility. The purpose of this position is to register patients scheduled for surgery as well as their families/visitors into the surgical waiting area and operate as the liaison between the operative suite areas/staff and patients /visitors.
The position involves monitoring patient and family entrance and exit, receiving calls and directing information to appropriate parties concerning the organization, functions, activities, and personnel of the Surgery Service and the facility.The incumbent provides information in person or on the telephone in response to inquiries or status changes concerning the condition, location, progress, and other potential information related to the surgical patient and/or his/her visitors. S/he may receive telephone calls from individuals who frequently do not know the medical center organization or specific information related to the surgical service not the person with whom they need to speak.Other duties may also include:

Information Receptionist GS-3- Minimum Qualifications: Individual Occupational Requirement: Basic requirement that must be met in order to qualify for entry into this job series, and it is something that can't be waived. Please select the statement below that best describes your education and/or experience to meet the specific qualification requirements for this position. The Information Receptionist for the GS-03 grade level is: General experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area (i.e. customer service in a clinical or administrative setting, direct patient care, indirect patient care, etc.) of the occupation or you must have successfully completed 1 year of study that included study in medical, health, or related fields. You must submit a transcript or certificate from medical or technical program showing the education you are claiming.
In addition to the Information Receptionist, you must qualify based on experience, education, or a combination of experience and education as specified below:
6 months of general experience -OR-
Successful completion of 1 year of study that includes study in medical or health related fields. (Transcripts must be submitted). -OR-
Combination of experience and education (please see below for more information)
General Experience: (1) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. General experience includes Customer service in a clinical setting, direct patient care, indirect patient care.
Substitution of Education: Successfully completed post-high school education is qualifying for grade GS-3. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school.
Combining Experience and Education: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience are also qualifying. For GS-3 level positions, determine the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the 6 months' experience required for GS-3; then determine the applicant's education as a percentage of the l year of education that meets the requirements for GS-3. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-3.Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: Required to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time along with sitting at computer for extended periods of time to perform work. May be required to push a wheelchair, bend or kneel to obtain information or assist patients. Required to carry light objects such as files, clipboards, medical records, etc.
