About the Position: The Walla Walla District US Army Corps of Engineers is comprised of motivated and talented employees providing the very best engineering services for communities in the Pacific Northwest. The District helps manage local water resources for navigation, flood damage reduction, disaster assistance, hydroelectric power generation, and other natural and heritage areas.
Duties
Develop and manage the public affairs program for the Walla Walla District Corps of Engineers.
Plan, direct, execute and evaluate programs to inform and educate general and specialized publics about the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Department of Army Programs and activities.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the local, regional, national, and international news media and other agencies and special interest groups.
Serves as the primary spokesperson for the District.
Develop performance standards, evaluates performance, and where appropriate, recommends awards.
Give advice, counsel, and instruction to individual employees on both work and administrative matters.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Writing informational materials such as news releases, fact sheets, brochures, speeches, presentations; AND 2) Developing effective communications with print and broadcast media representatives; AND 3) Developing web and strategic e-communication products. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12 or above).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
