You will serve as a WELDER in the STRUCTURAL SHOP, PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will observe and obey fire safety and prevention rules and regulations. You will check weld deposit during operation both visually and with gauges for quality and proper size. You will be able to produce first time quality welds.

• This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
• Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
• You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
• This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
• Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
• You will be fully qualified as a SubSafe welder.

Qualifications

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION: *Determining the welding method to use, and selecting the right materials to use, such as: electrodes, filler-wire, flux, etc. *Demonstrating the skill to weld metal parts and structures that may vary in size, shape, and thickness from .025 inches or less to several inches thick requiring multiple welding passes. *Operating various types of electrical arc-welding and cutting equipment by manual, semi-automatic methods. *Knowing how various metals and alloys such as different kinds of steel, aluminum, cast iron, nickel, monel-metal, brass, bronze, copper, magnesium, beryllium, and titanium react to different processes and methods. *Welding in all positions including flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead.
