About the Position: This position is located at the Department of Education Activity, Americas Southeast District, Facilities Custodial Branch, at Fort Novosel, Alabama. This position is intermittent, meaning that there are no scheduled hours and the employee is on call.

Duties

Disinfects restrooms to include urinals, toilet bowls, and sinks. Dusts, waxes, and/or polishes furniture and fixtures. Buff and waxes floors. Empties waste baskets. Provides updates to supervisor status and progress of work. Sets up and tears down for special events or assemblies. Adjusts and/or performs minor maintenance to attachments on power equipment. Ensures that needed materials and tools are available on site for workers to complete daily duties. Opens and closes school following all security procedures. Demonstrates proper work methods.

Requirements

• Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Requirement.

• One year trial or probationary period may be required.
• Appointment subject to a suitability/fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation.
• This position requires a Tier 1 (T1) investigation with Childcare Checks since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age.

• Position has heavy lifting requirement of weight up to 50lbs.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Custodial Worker without more than normal supervision. Perform a full range of general janitorial duties at a facility that include sweeping, mopping and/or waxing floors, and cleaning restrooms. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Requires working on ladders/scaffold in the performance of some duties. Working Conditions: Usually works indoors in areas which are adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated. Exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritation from strong cleaning solutions. Care must be taken to avoid serious injury when working on ladders and scaffolds or when using heavy powered equipment.
