Duties

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:
Interviews veterans or their designated representative in order to collect demographic information relative to their finances, insurance, address, work history, etc. This information serves as a basis for determining entitlement to medical care as well as bill preparation and collections on billable episodes of inpatient and outpatient care. Communicates with veterans in person, by telephone, or by mail, and performs timely and accurate input into the appropriate data base system.
Maintains workload reports relative to these duties.
Advises veterans of their entitlement to various medical benefits and discusses copayment requirements of veterans in discretionary categories.
Responds to inquiries from veterans and provides orientation and training to new staff members.
Researches and handles complex questions relative to the area of expertise referred by the supervisor.
Focuses on the details of the customer's needs and helps the customer arrive at a satisfactory solution to problems.
Participates in the facility's outreach events promoting the VA.
Provides on-the-job training to new employees in accordance with established procedures and practices.
May serve on various hospital committees.
May perform other clerical functions as needed (i.e., request office supplies, print appoint letters, etc.).
Prepares various reports pertaining to administrative processing.
Serves as the section timekeeper.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm.

Qualifications
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped them with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-4 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes: knowledge of medical terminology; assisting with eligibility and entitlement to medical benefits; entering data into computer systems; preparing various reports; and communicating with and providing customer service to individuals from a variety of backgrounds.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (Transcript Required): Successful completion of (4) years of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial or technical school.

COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Transcript Required): Combination of successfully completed post high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Physical Requirements: The work is usually sedentary but may involve some standing and walking to outlying areas. Some bending, lifting, or carrying of light items may be required.
