Duties
You will serve as an authority for a specified patient population, independently assessing acute and non-acute clinical problems and toxicities, and appropriately consulting medical staff colleagues from the specific institute or program. Some major duties include:
Provide comprehensive oncology nursing, preventative, and therapeutic health care service to patients and family members as a primary health resource.
Perform and document physical assessments and patient histories. Predict and analyze trends in patient conditions and develop a patient management plan in response to the data obtained.
Develop patient management strategies that are successful in meeting complex, subtle and challenging patient care and research needs. Serve as a patient advocate, along with other health care professionals.
Order patient admissions, transfers and discharges. Order and interpret appropriate laboratory and diagnostic studies. Order appropriate medication and treatments.
Serve as a consultant and role model for professional practice, collaboration and communication. Use advanced communication skills to problem solve complex or unpredictable situations and to improve processes and services to patients and colleagues.
Participate in clinical practice peer review and develop multidisciplinary quality improvement programs and projects. Maintain an overview of the clinical program in order to collaborate and contribute to the planning of budgets and resource allocations.

- Position requires work in a hospital and a research institution. There is a risk of exposure to infectious diseases, radioactive materials, electrical hazards, irritant chemicals, construction noise and/or explosive gases.
- Position requires Nurse Practitioner licensure.
Qualifications
To qualify for an Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner), GS-0610 position, you must meet the following qualification requirements:
A. Have a graduate or higher-level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position. NOTE: Degree from a Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
AND
B. Have passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).
AND
C. Possess a current, active, full and unrestricted license, or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States in the clinical specialty required by the position.
Additional Qualification Requirement:
In addition, to qualify for a Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) position at the GS-13 level, you must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing comprehensive oncology nursing, preventative, and therapeutic health care service to patients and family members as a primary health resource; predicting and analyzing trends in patient conditions and developing patient management plans; designing, implementing and evaluating nursing research studies to support nursing care requirements; and performing or requesting special screening developmental tests, or laboratory tests and interpreting the results.
