This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center (VAMC) in the Engineering Service, Maintenance & Operations Section, Renovation Team. The incumbent performs at journeymen level a variety of trades including: carpentry, masonry, tile setting, painting, plastering, roofing, steel stud framing, drywall installation and finishing, carpentry and dust control measures.

Duties

Carpentry The journeyman level carpentry skills required as a maintenance mechanic will include constructing, altering, repairing, and modifying items made of metal, wood, and wood substitutes. The mechanic must be able to assemble/disassemble, install, repair & modify steel stud framing, wood & wood structures for structural soundness to include creating or working from complex drawings as a layout of the entire floor plan, ensuring assembly is consistent with building codes, safety standards, local standards, and manufacturing standards. Install, construct, repair or modify window frames, doors, outside trims, inside trims, counter tops & equipment cabinets. The mechanic will be required to interpret drawings, blueprints, as-builts, floor plans and specifications independently and determine layout and working sequences for renovation projects utilizing authorized building materials. The mechanic will be required to set up and operate various wood working tools and electric or cordless machines; use tools and power equipment such as handsaws, power saws, wet tile saws, skill saws, scaffolding, forklifts, pallet jacks, hand trucks, and dollies. Plaster/Painting The mechanic will be required to perform new wall taping and mudding, sheetrock repairs, and plaster/tile repairs. Prepares paints using tinting, blending, matching, toning and mixing in additives. Painting and priming surfaces on new construction and maintain areas during routine inspections. Masonry The mechanic will be required to make repairs, maintain, modify and adjust glass blocks, pre-formed or pre-cast concrete walls, concrete walks and walkways and other surfaces and structures around the facility built from stone, brick, block or concrete. Roofing The mechanic will be responsible for locating leaks, determining cause and extent of damages to the facility, and determining the type of work to be conducted and proper techniques and methods The mechanic must be familiar with installations, renovations, maintenance and repairs of multiple roofing systems and accessories such as flashing, gutters, sheathing, membrane and metal roofing. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Heavy Lifting, 45 pounds and over; Moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds; Pulling hand over hand; pushing; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking; standing; crawling; kneeling; repeated bending; climbing, legs only; climbing, use of legs and arms; Both legs required; operation of crane, truck, tractor or motor vehicle; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; Hearing (aid permitted). The work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, greasy, and uncomfortable odors. The maintenance mechanic is sometimes required to make repairs and installations outside in inclement weather. The employee is exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, and infections. Occasional exposure to the possibility of broken bones.
