This position is located in the Digital Forensics and Analysis Unit (DFAU), Office of Investigations (INV), Office of Inspector General (OIG), Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The Office of Investigations is responsible for investigating and bringing to the appropriate criminal and civil justice system those individuals and organizations involved in financial, professional, civil, or criminal misconduct relating to Department of Homeland Security programs and operations.
Being a Digital Forensics Analyst, you are responsible for assisting in investigations requiring computer forensics analysis, including imaging and processing digital media; locating and identifying evidence of child sexual exploitation, financial, public safety, corruption, and national security violations; validation testing of computer forensic hardware and software and participating in setting up virtualized computer system environments on stand-alone workstations. The incumbent utilizes specialized technical equipment to discover and analyze deleted or "hidden" information that may serve as useful evidence in a criminal case.
Typical assignments include:
Plans, coordinates and directs the forensic retrieving of digital, electronic and mobile device analysis and technical service operations.
Assists as part of the INV criminal investigative team with the execution of highly complex criminal investigations requiring the use of specialized technical equipment for the purpose of discovering and analyzing available, deleted or "hidden" information that may serve as useful evidence in a criminal case.
In conjunction with designated management officials, advises federal prosecutors on audit findings based on retrieved data, proceedings, discovery assistance and may provide determinations of compliance with laws and regulations enforced by INV.
Inventories, examines and performs comprehensive technical analyses of computer related evidence such as magnetic media storage devices (floppy disks, hard disks, magnetic tapes, optical disks, memory cards, magnetic strip cards, etc.), GPS devices, cellular and handheld devices, and other digital, electronic and mobile devices.
Works under the legal authority of court orders, search warrants and other legal processes to gain access to electronic equipment, files, records, databases, images, storage devices, etc., to prepare pertinent items of evidence for examination obtained from said legal process. May be required to testify as a witness to support evidentiary value.
Subsequent to the serving of search warrants, conducting raids, etc., the incumbent may provide technical guidance to the investigative team and others as required before, during and after investigations to ensure precautions are taken to prevent data and equipment damage.
Maintains liaison as it relates to forensic documentation with other federal agencies, the computer industry, etc. through participation in various meetings, training, seminars and conferences.
Studies computer literature, attends trade shows, and seminars, reviews new products, etc. to keep abreast of the latest information and technology available.
Qualifications
Federal experience is not required. The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or Volunteer Service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-13: You must have 1 year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position include:
Conducting digital forensics examinations on cell phones, computers, and other media devices.
