The typical season is December through May but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: December 2023.

Duties

Performs trails maintenance duties such as: Assisting in the maintenance and construction of graded and paved trails. General trail maintenance such as clearing of drainage features, out sloping trail tread, logging and brushing trails, bridge repair and/or construction. Remove windfalls, rockslides, surface outcroppings and debris from trails. Routine painting, rough carpentry, raking of trail tread. Operate power, hand and stationary tools such as chain saws, brush cutters, Pulaskis, shovels and Mcleods. Transporting construction materials. Shaping of stone and construction and maintenance of dry and wet multi and single coursed walls. Physical Demands: Heavy physical exertion is frequently required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. Ability to frequently walk up to 20 miles daily while carrying a loaded pack weighing up to 60 pounds; and must not have potential emergency medical problems that could complicate work in remote areas for extended periods of time. Working Conditions: Ability to live and work effectively in isolated backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people. Some location may have you live and work out-of-doors on projects including mountainous terrain up to 14,000 feet in elevation in all extremes of weather. Trail work is dusty and hazardous conditions may exist while working at certain jobsites. This position may also require working around machinery.

Have the ability to do the work of a Maintenance Worker (Trails) WG-05 without more than normal supervision. (Screen out). This includes work such as: tasks on a trail crew or group responsible for carrying out work on trails. Constructing rock walls, water bars, and retainer bars. Using chainsaws to cut wood or limb trees. Using jackhammers.
