This position is located in the Santa Monica Mountains Recreation Area, in the Facilities Division.
This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. Selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for approximately two weeks in the month of June during the first year.
Duties
Duties performed in the position of Maintenance Mechanic WG-4749-09 include but are not limited to:
Maintenance, repair and construction of facilities including historic structures and resources.
Carpentry: Constructs, alters, modifies or repairs a wide range of features in buildings, quarters and other facilities.
Plumbing: Installs, modifies, and repairs new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers, and lay out of such things as angles, arcs, and circles.
Painting: Performs painting duties with little oversight and/or review of work during progress or upon completion.
Masonry: Maintains, constructs, repairs, and alters a variety of structures and surfaces of brick, block, stone, and other related materials such as bridges, bridge abutments, retaining walls, head wall structures, smokestacks, decorative walls, walkways, exhibit bases, patios, foundations, fireplaces, manholes, catch basins, etc.
Roofing: Must determine roofing work to be completed, locating leaks and determining their cause and extent of damage, selecting the work method to be followed for repair, and determining and using a greater variety of roofing materials and accessories such as shingles, roofing felt, and asphalt. Responsible for installing new roofs, including metal flashing, gutters, and other roofing accessories, and repair or replace sheathing, boards, beams, and joists.
Electrical: Makes repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures such as broken and bare wiring, burned out switches and relays, loose connections and fittings, damaged light fixtures, and poorly operating thermostats.
Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate and required occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 lbs. unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend stoop, climb and work in awkward positions.
Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment, plants, solvents etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks and biting insects.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT)
Knowledge of equipment and assembly, installation repair, etc.
Technical practices.
Use of measuring instruments.
Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading).
Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment.
Knowledge of Materials.
