About the Position: This position is located at the Rock Island Arsenal Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center (RIA-JMTC).
This position is a TERM not to exceed 13 months, with provisions to extend up to eight years with provisions to be made permanent without further competition.
Positions will be filled at either the WG-5, WG-8 or WG-10 grade levels. If selected at a lower grade level, noncompetitive promotion to the full performance WG-10 grade level is authorized.
Duties
Apply accepted trade methods using both semi-automatic and manual welding processes to fabricate, assemble, modify, and repair various metal and alloy parts.
Weld a variety of metals, including ferrous and nonferrous materials, and alloys involving dissimilar metal of various sizes, shapes, and thickness from very thin (e.g., .025 inches or less) to very thick (e.g., armor plating).
Operate carbon arc equipment for cutting/and or gouging of material or weldments.
Plan and lay out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications, shop orders, and work orders, and formulates the steps necessary to accomplish it.
Review final products to see that completed welds meet specifications and accepted trade standards.
Determine and use appropriate technique such as, preheating, heat sinks, and stress relieving and controls metals to prevent distortion or metal burns and to meet weld dimensions, tolerances, strength, and other requirements.

- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Appointment subject to pre-employment and annual physical examination.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Welder without more than normal supervision. Applicants must meet the screen out element to be considered further. The work of the position normally includes: Use of a variety of manual welding processes; set up welding equipment and make the required welds based on instructions and perform a variety of weld techniques.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work is usually performed standing on concrete floors, or as required, to climb and/or crawl on equipment being worked on. Works in awkward and cramped positions also requiring bending, twisting, pushing and pulling, squatting, kneeling, walking, sitting, climbing, standing and lifting. Handles, carries, lifts or positions objects weighing from 30 to 60 pounds, or lifts heavy objects weighing up to 60 pounds. Assistance is available from co-workers when objects are too heavy for safe lifting. Mechanical hoists, cranes, or forklifts are utilized on heavier objects.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside, usually in a welding booth, subject to electric shock, burns from molten metal, injury to eyes from welding fumes, infra-red and ultra-violet radiation and flying sparks, cuts and bruises or broken bones when working with sharp and/or heavy objects. Constant exposure to dirt, grease fumes and noise, and discomfort when wearing protective clothing such as masks, aprons, gloves, and eye protection. Occasionally performs work outside, being exposed to existing weather conditions on equipment that is too large or cumbersome to bring inside.
