This Security Specialist position is located in the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), National Security Division (NSD), Office of the Assistant Attorney General (OAAG), Executive Office. The mission of the organization is to coordinate the Department's efforts in carrying out its core mission of combating terrorism and protecting national security.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide Information Security, Physical Security, Personnel Security, Property and Communications Security for multiple NSD and multiple DOJ agency facilities as well as to provide leadership in the implementation of specific program discipline initiatives. This position ensures the preservation of a safe, secure, and peaceful environment for NSD and DOJ employees.
The duties of this Security Specialist position include but are not limited to:
Perform information security duties including but not limited to, reviewing equipment and devices in planning and implementing protective methods and security procedures, such as delegation and exercise of classification and declassification authority, development of classification guides, document marking, safeguarding, personnel access controls, need to know criteria, physical storage and control, and security education.
Respond to questions or problems involving implementation of information security guidelines at lower levels and in inspecting operating security programs for adequacy, efficiency, and need for improvement.
Prepare and review reports of physical security surveys and inspections, and advises management officials of deficiencies.
Investigate and analyze a variety of unusual information security problems, questions, or conditions associated with general questions about security.
Coordinate with scientific, technical, and other subject-matter specialists to assess risk of loss, value of loss, and the classification level appropriate to information sensitivity.
Collaborate with organization managers and other specialists to develop, review, and analyze a wide range of modified, new, or proposed security policies, instructions, guidelines, opinions, and decisions.
Plan and implement and review physical security protective methods and procedures, including a variety of intrusion detection systems and devices, safes, storage containers, locks and locking systems, personnel entry control systems, ballistic protection measures, and loss prevention.
Work with senior specialists and agency managers to develop alternative strategies and assess trade-offs between conflicting requirements, such as issues arising from the implementation of new or revised security practices.
Requirements
- You must be a United States Citizen or National.
- You will be required to complete a pre-employment security investigation and background check which includes a drug screening.
- You may be required to complete a one-year probationary or two-year trial period.
- Selective Service registration is required for males born on, or after, December 31st 1959. Those not registered should have an approved exemption on file.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of Security Specialist at (GS-0080-11), you must meet the basic qualification requirements listed below AND possess the required specialized experience specific to this series and grade you're applying to.
If you are a current or former government employee on a permanent appointment in the competitive service, you will need to demonstrate 1-year (52-weeks) at the next lower grade level, to meet the time-in-grade requirements for this occupational series and grade. Additionally, please ensure to submit an applicable SF50 (please refer to the "required documents" section for additional information).
Specialized Experience for the Security Specialist, GS-0080-11 - your resume must demonstrate one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector evaluating security measures to ensure compliance with established security policies and procedures.

You must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a degree; or LL.M. (Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position)

Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of the first 2 full years.
