About the Position: This position is located at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA. The southern Puget Sound Region of Western Washington. The installation is less than an hour from Seattle and Sea Tac International Airport. The majestic Mount Rainier, Cascade Mountains and Pacific Ocean beaches are favorite summer and weekend destinations. Nearby Tacoma, a city of over 200,000, has wonderful restaurants and shopping centers.

Duties

Serves as a Victim Advocate (SHARP) providing professional and comprehensive advocacy services to victims/survivors of sexual assault and sexual harassment. Conducts assessments with clients to evaluate needs and risks; recognizing the need for professional intervention and referring to appropriate services. Ensures victims of sexual assault receive all needed guidance and emotional support during administrative, medical, investigative, and legal procedures. Ensures victims understand the processes involved and that data will be collected, reported, and maintained on cases. Accompanies victims and provides support in securing medical treatment, safe shelter, protective orders, court hearings, educational, transportation, financial services, and follow-up assistance. Provides support before, during and after trials. Conducts interactive training workshops/seminars to victims, community agencies and the organization.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Background checks against all records required by law, OPM, DoD, and Army policy or regulation will be conducted prior to entering on duty in the position, and IAW governing regulations, on a recurring basis while employed in the position.
  • Minimum of a Tier 3 background investigation, or equivalent, and enrollment in Continuous Evaluation are required.
  • State Criminal History Repository check is required for all states of residence in the previous five and/or up to ten years.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and have the ability to operate a motor vehicle should the need arise to operate a government vehicle/motor pool vehicle.
  • Within six months of employment must successfully complete required Sexual Harassment and Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) training and obtain and maintain D-SAACP certification.
  • Must complete all required training, obtain D-SAACP certification, and be placed on appointment orders prior to having any victim contact or access to victim information.
  • Required to self-report civilian arrests, the filing of criminal charges, and/or convictions of any criminal offense to their supervisors.
  • May be required to carry a cell phone and be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week on a rotational basis, based on the needs of the organization.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
  • Position is Emergency Essential in support of mobilization and wartime mission.
  • Position requires the employee pass screening for illegal drug use prior to appointment and subsequent periodic drug screening thereafter.
  • Employee will be screened by the National Sex Offender Registry.
  • Employee must pass a medical examination and receive required immunizations for the overseas/deployment locations.
  • Employee must successfully complete SHARP Training Course(s) In Accordance With - SHARP Program requirements and obtain Department of Defense (DoD) certification within initial 6 months of employment.
  • Employees of SHARP positions must complete all required training, obtain certification, and be placed on appointment orders prior to having any victim contact or access to victim information.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • Required to complete six weeks SHARP Career Course within six months of hire.
  • Required to obtain and maintain Defense Sexual Assault Advocate Credentialing throughout employment.

Combination of Education and Experience: that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. OR C. Experience: Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized experience: To qualify, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07). Specialized experience is defined as providing professional advocacy services to victims or survivors of sexual assault and sexual harassment; conducting assessments with clients to evaluate needs and risks; recognizing the need for professional intervention and referring to appropriate services; and maintaining partnerships in the community. OR Education:2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's equivalent graduate degree such as counseling, social work, psychology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
