The Civil Division, U.S. Department of Justice, Consumer Protection Branch is seeking a paralegal specialist to work directly with attorneys on fast-paced, high-profile litigation. The successful candidate will work side-by-side with a team of attorneys and paralegals on headline-making cases.
Duties
As a GS-0950-09 or GS-0950-11 Paralegal Specialist, your typical work assignments may include the following:
Conducting research, writing and drafting documents, and organizing as related to legal services.
Conducting cite-checking and proofreading of briefs and other legal memoranda.
Selecting, assembling, summarizing, and compiling substantive information on statutes, legislation, and specific subjects.
Conferring with the case attorney as to trial preparation needs and travel with case teams in support of trials
Preparing draft reports and memoranda, which provide preliminary options and recommendations for use by attorneys.
Participating in pre-trial witness conference in order to note additional matters to investigate prior to trial.
Handling correspondence between client agencies, U.S. Attorneys, and opposing counsel.
Managing, tracking, and organizing case information.
Coordinating and managing e-discovery databases.
Requirements
- You must be a United States Citizen or National.
- You will be required to complete a pre-employment security investigation and background check which includes a drug screening.
- You may be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
- Selective service registration is required for males born on, or after, December 31, 1959. Those not registered should have an approved exemption on file.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of Paralegal Specialistat GS-0950-9/11 , you must meet the basic qualification requirements listed below AND possess the required specialized experience specific to this series and grade you're applying to.
If you are a current or former government employee on a permanent appointment in the competitive service, you will need to demonstrate 1-year (52-weeks) at the qualifying grade level as listed in the qualifications below. Time-in-Grade applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. Additionally, please ensure to submit an applicable SF-50 (please refer to the "required documents" section for additional information).
To qualify for the GS-09 Paralegal Specialist position, you must demonstrate that you have one of the following:
1. At least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience that is equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the federal service performing such duties as organizing evidentiary materials and maintaining litigation files; utilizing research tools; and assisting attorney's with preparing legal documents.
2. Possess a master's or equivalent degree, OR successfully complete at least 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree, OR received an LL.B or J.D. Education must be in a field that is directly related to the duties of this position.
3. Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements are at least 100%. (To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Divide your total semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two total percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.)
To qualify for the GS-11 Paralegal Specialist, you must demonstrate that you have one of the following:
1. At least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience that is equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the federal service performing such duties as conducting legal research of defined scope and complexity; verifying citations and legal references; drafting legal documents; using electronic databases to perform a variety of litigation support tasks; and corresponding with clients and staff on case studies.
2. Possess a Ph.D. or equivalent graduate degree, OR successfully complete at least 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree (54 semester hours or equivalent) that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work, OR, received an LL.M..
3. Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements are at least 100%. (To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Divide your total semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two total percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify)
