This position is established in the El Paso VA Healthcare System (EPVAHCS). The incumbent functions as a specialized administrative and program assistant for the organization's Patient Safety Manager (PSM) and High Reliability Organization (HRO) Programs under Quality, Safety, and Value Service (QSV). The PSM/HRO Assistant supports all areas of Patient Safety and HRO.
Duties
Major duties include:
Performs work involving the collection, compilation, analysis and data base maintenance and/or tracking of data and statistical information in support of the Patient Safety program operation.
Analyzes patient safety reports and enters these reports in the Joint Patient Safety Reporting (JPSR) System.
Coordinates and conducts Suicide Risk Assessments.
Manages the National Center for Patient Safety (NCPS) database for EPVAHCS reports and enters Root Cause Analysis
(RCA) into the NCPS RCA database "SPOT".
Participates in RCA cases as the recorder and/or the facilitator using appropriate tools such as flow charting, brainstorming, and cause and effect analysis.
Communicates with staff to obtain additional and accurate information regarding adverse events and event disclosure.
Coordinates weekly Patient Safety Environment of Care (EOC) rounds, enters collected data into the data base and requests follow-up when required.
Coordinate's facility wide annual Patient Safety Events.
Develops educational articles, storyboards and/or staff notices as guided by the PSM to convey program information to
target audiences.
Creates charters and time frames in collaboration with the Patient Safety Manager.
Processes incoming and outgoing materials such as RCA Charter letters, NCPS Newsletters, posters, and other forms of written communication.
Schedules RCA Team meetings ensuring completion of required timelines, coordinates meetings, and/or schedules conferences.
Provides support, education, and training to new and current employees on the web based JPSR system.
Ensures the ongoing review of pertinent data related to the Patient Safety Program and HRO activities to include but not limited to NCPS Quarterly Reports, NCPS Patient Safety Culture Survey (PSCS), Patient Safety Assessment Tool (PSAT), Patient Safety Program Site Visit Reports, All Employ Survey (AES), and The Joint Commission Survey Reports
Work Schedule: Monday- Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm

Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Some work may require movement between offices, hospitals, warehouses, and similar areas for meetings and to conduct work. Work may also require walking/standing, in conjunctions with travel to and attendance at meetings and/or conferences away from the work site. Incumbent may carry and lift light items weighing less than 15 pounds.

GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to complete the duties of the position including those necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient age/population served. Should demonstrate current clinical/healthcare experience, including a background in patient safety and/or work with implementing High Reliability initiatives in healthcare, knowledge and understanding of RCA, Systems, Crew Resource Management (CRM), Just Culture, and the characteristics of High Reliability Organizations (HRO), evidence of (by appointment of title) and background in healthcare leadership with experience leading cultural and organizational change, and the ability to create and foster productive and collegial relationships among numerous stakeholders; Communication and interpersonal relations, including the ability to relate to internal and external customers appropriately and courteously; Communication with customers in a courteous manner; respond promptly to their requests; Organize and present significant amounts of data; Developing and maintain Excel/Access database.
There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
