About the Position: This is a Medical Support Assistant (Office Automation) position located at Brooke Army Medical Center DIR of Surgery, Neurosurgery Service. M-F
This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
Duties
Performs the full range of receptionist, recordkeeping and miscellaneous clerical duties within the ambulatory setting. Enters, manipulates and/or retrieves information and data from automated systems
Receives patients and visitors as the initial point of contact, in person or telephonically. Monitors and manages the Army Medicine Secure Messaging System (AMSMS) at the clinic/practice level. Records and relays messages and/or redirect calls.
Maintains all patients' records, both electronic and paper, according to regulation ensuring each entry contains proper patient and health care provider identification.
Responds to emergency calls and notifies emergency medical personnel.
Provides information regarding the practice, clinic, and hospital policies, procedures, and locations to patients, family members, staff, etc.
Resolves complaints of a local administrative nature and refers other complaints to the appropriate authorities.
Types routine correspondence, progress reports, medical statements, memoranda and statistical reports using various automation systems and programs.
Schedules appropriate patient appointments manually and/or in MHS Genesis. Coordinates and/or schedules patient appointments with other clinics or specialties.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- May be required to work overtime, weekends, holidays and evenings.
- This position is a weather essential position.
- Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing clerical and/or receptionist duties such as monitoring, scheduling and rescheduling patients for treatment, initiating, assembling, and/or filing medical records.This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
Proficiency Required:This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.
Education must have been obtained from an accredited program recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
