We are seeking a highly-motivated student in support of our mission to detect and deter waste, fraud, abuse, and misconduct in DOJ programs and personnel, and to promote economy and efficiency in those programs. You will work to gain practical work experience that augments your academic course of study.

Duties

As an Information Technology Intern (Non-NTE) with the OIG, your duties will consist of, but not limited to: IT Customer Service - Working within the customer service group on a variety of Help Desk functions including desktop support, mobile device support, IT asset management, and various customer support needs. Assisting with the installation of new hardware and/or rebuilding existing hardware in accordance with standards and project/operations goals and requirements. Assisting with new user hardware and software setup; contributing to the development and maintenance of infrastructure systems. Assist in the development of processes and procedures to enhance operational efficiency. Assist with data entry and develop and generate routine and Adhoc reports. Attend meetings and briefings in support of the assigned IT Office. IT Software Applications - Assisting IT specialists in monitoring and on occasion performing limited duties in information technology and information systems support. Assisting IT specialists with project management duties including tracking and reporting on projects through their lifecycle. Assisting IT specialists translate the functional and business requirements of customers and stakeholders into automated application systems and databases. Assist in the development of processes and procedures to enhance operational efficiency. Assist in the development of processes and procedures to enhance operational efficiency. Assist with data entry and develop and generate routine and Adhoc reports. Attend meetings and briefings in support of the assigned IT Office. IT Engineering - Assisting IT specialists in implementing established procedures with analysis of LAN system needs for growth and expansion to incorporate personal computer (PC) LANs into the wide area network (WAN). Assisting IT specialists to design, develop, customize, and implement a wide range of hardware and software to support large-scale LAN/WAN systems including protocols, simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP) management systems, communications controllers, bridges, routers, and other network devices that support extensive operations referring potential problems to more experienced specialists. Participating in projects to prototype and pilot new system concepts and enhancements. Assist in the development of processes and procedures to enhance operational efficiency. Assist with data entry and develop and generate routine and Adhoc reports. Attend meetings and briefings in support of the assigned IT Office. IT Security - Assisting IT specialists by performing routine Cybersecurity using a variety of monitoring tools to identify and remediate potential security vulnerabilities. Assisting IT specialists to obtain Authority to Operate and Test determinations following testing and hardening of information technology systems to meet Department of Justice, Office of the Chief Information Officer, security standards following applicable Federal Information Security Management Act standards referring potential problems to more experienced specialists. Assisting IT specialists identify, implementing, and assess common IT security controls; developing and updating SSP, and coordinating with the Information System Owner, any changes to the IT system and assesses the security impact of those changes. Assist in the development of processes and procedures to enhance operational efficiency. Assist with data entry and develop and generate routine and Adhoc reports. Attend meetings and briefings in support of the assigned IT Office.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • You must be able to pass a background investigation and credit check and drug testing. You will be subject to random drug testing.
  • You must be registered for the Selective Service, if applicable.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Your application package must support your responses to the questionnaire.
  • You will be required to work a minimum of 20 hours a week during the school year.
  • If selected you must complete and sign a Pathways Participant Agreement and will be required to provide the OIG Pathways Program Officer with a copy of your transcript verifying continuous enrollment, GPA and grade requirements each semester.
  • You must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better for the duration of this internship (failure to meet this requirement will result in immediate termination).
  • The student will participate in an OIG-wide mentorship program.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications Must be at least 16 years of age. Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a Technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school, at a qualifying educational institution on a half-time or full-time basis. Must be in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA (grade point average) of 3.0 or better (must provide a transcript and proof of enrollment/acceptance letter); these standards will be in effect for the duration of the internship. Must maintain enrollment/continue education throughout the duration of employment under the Pathways Program. Minimum Qualifications: In addition to meeting the Basic Qualifications stated above, you must also meet the minimum qualifications for the appropriate grade level, or applicable general or specialized experience, or a combination of both To qualify for the GS-7 level, you must have one full year of graduate level education, eligibility under superior academic achievement provision and completion of a bachelor's degree, or one year of specialized experience at the GS-5 level or equivalent. Specialized experience is defined experience performing routine or practical work related to the management, technical support, operations, or deliverability of computer technologies and services to end-users. Superior Academic Achievement is defined as: a) Class Standing - upper third of the graduating class based on completed courses in the college, university, or major subdivision; b) Grade Point Average - 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on your official transcript or as computed based on 4 years of education or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of curriculum; OR 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in your major field or the required courses in your major field completed during the final 2 years of your curriculum. If more than 10 percent of total undergraduate credit hours are non-graded, i.e. pass/fail, CLEP, CCAF, DANTES, military credit, etc., you cannot qualify based on GPA; c) Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society (note: freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this position). (If qualifying based on class standing or honor society membership, provide appropriate documentation. To qualify for the GS-9 level, you must have two academic years of graduate level education, a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree, or one year of specialized experience at the GS-7 level or equivalent. Specialized experience is defined as progressively responsible clerical office support work that indicates the ability to perform the duties of a General Office and Administrative Support Intern. Examples of specialized experience include: reviewing documents for accuracy and completeness; typing and formatting correspondence and forms; obtaining information from files or general reference sources; taking messages and scheduling appointments; performing routine administrative functions.

Education
