Duties

This position is to provide research, measurements, and services to support development and production of reference materials for chemical oceanography, primarily for pH. The major duties involve working in teams to develop and implement the associated chemical analysis methods, to improve chemical models of seawater, and to develop and produce chemical oceanographic reference materials. This position also includes the maintenance of scientific laboratory infrastructure (such as performing maintenance on laboratory equipment), the maintenance of a scientific laboratory notebook and associated electronic data records, the writing of internal reports and external publications, conformance within a laboratory quality management system, and the performance of other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must also have one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 (ZP-II at NIST) level. Specialized Experience is defined as experience measuring seawater pH; modeling seawater chemical equilibria; developing and/or using reference materials for seawater carbon and pH; writing laboratory reports and manuscripts for publication. OR 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR A combination of education and specialized experience as defined in the additional requirements Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done. We will credit all qualifying volunteer experience in your application.
