The Accounting Technician performs a variety of duties which includes four areas of responsibility: (1) Accounting Support, (2) Accounts Receivable Support, (3) Travel, and (4) Agent Cashier Support. The employee will be cross trained on all three areas of responsibility to include functional rotations.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Major duties and responsibilities include: Performing clerical, assistant, or technician level work in support of a budget, accounting, auditing, fiscal and financial management function. Examining, verifying, and maintaining financial accounts and accounting data and classifying accounting transactions including the verification of the accuracy and completeness of the accounting data across multiple appropriations. Determining the general ledger accounts, journals, and subsidiary accounts affected, and the debit and credit entries to be made. Technical responsibility for the maintenance, auditing, and reconciliation of the general and subsidiary ledger accounts, for the preparation of accurate and timely reports, and for the control of funds. Researching, interpreting, and verifying which appropriation and general ledger accounts a document and subsequent accounting transactions will affect; establishing routines for input of these transactions. Preparing reconciliations of the general ledger to subsidiary accounts, accruals, adjusting journal entries, accounting reports and special reports. Assisting auditors as required by Fiscal Service regulations, including quarterly audits of Agent Cashier, Employee Accounts, Patient Funds, Voucher Audit and General Post Funds. Coordinating, reviewing, auditing and reconciling government travel, convenience check, purchase card, and other transactions. Performing other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: May be authorized for highly qualified candidates. Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not approved. IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-7 LEVEL YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6) in Federal Service that has given you the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of an Accounting Technician GS-7. Specialized experience includes utilizing knowledge of accounting principles, methods, procedures, and techniques to conduct difficult analysis; experience validating transactions and performing research to resolve inconsistencies; examining accounts to analyze and detect trends/problems; using various accounting system software package applications and computer systems to resolve problems of processed transactions. (THIS EXPERIENCE MUST BE SUPPORTED BY YOUR RESUME TO BE CREDITABLE.) You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Accounting OperationsAudit ReportingFinancial SystemsTechnical Competence IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work is principally sedentary, in a highly automated environment. It is usually accomplished while seated at a desk or table. Some work may require walking in an office or warehouse setting. Work may also require walking and standing in conjunction with travel to and attendance at meetings and conferences. Incumbent may be required to carry small file boxes into storage, lift a cash box, carry light items or drive a motor vehicle. Typical safety precautions, such as pulling file drawers, dropping equipment, etc., are to be observed. Electrical safety precautions must be observed in working around computers.
