About the Position: This position is with the U.S. Army Sustainment Command, Logistics Readiness Center, Maintenance Division Ground Maintenance Branch on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. It's a military installation (Army/Airforce) located approximately 9 miles from the city of Tacoma, Washington. This position will be filled on a permanent basis.
This position is in a Bargaining Unit.
Duties
Perform preparatory work for higher graded mechanics in the repair and overhaul of heavy mobile equipment.
Separate common hazardous materials into specified categories.
Inventory and requisition bench stock parts under supervision of higher-level mechanic.
Obtain tools and replacement parts for the repair and overhaul of heavy mobile equipment.
Operate a computer in order to inventory, order, receive, and issue parts and equipment.
Operate a forklift of up to 10,000 lbs to store, retrieve components, and assemblies in storage area.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- May be required to lift up to 60 pounds.
- Must complete pre-employment and annual physicals.
- Obtain and maintain a forklift license or certification within 6 months after hire
- Obtain and maintain a Hazardous Material certification within 6 months after hire.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50
U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic Helper without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform the common Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic Helper duties. I perform the less difficult tasks is prime. I perform preparatory work for higher graded mechanics in the repair and overhaul of heavy mobile equipment by retrieving tools, retrieving replacement parts, utilize tools by tightening nuts and bolts, cleaning and lubricating parts, and holding components and assemblies in place for higher graded mechanics as needed. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, stretching, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions for long periods. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing 50-60 pounds; occasionally handles heavier items. Uses lifting devices such as a forklift to lift and position heavy items
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in a large maintenance building which is generally well lit and heated. May work outside occasionally. Exposed to exhaust and paint fumes, chemicals, excessive noise, dirt) oil, grease, etc. Subject to cuts, bruises, back strains, shocks, burns and skin irritation. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment as required.
