This position is located at the VA NY Harbor Healthcare system in the Engineering Service at the St. Albans, Brooklyn and Manhattan campus. The incumbent is responsible for the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of equipment and building systems which serve the entire Medical Center.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to;
Replaces fluorescent tubes, incandescent bulbs, ballasts, switches, receptacles.
Fixture cleaning/lens replacement.
Install short electrical runs which includes new conduit and wiring.
Perform receptacle testing such as checks polarity, grounding and pin-tension required for JCAHO documentation.
Respond to fire alarms and perform fire alarm shutdowns, and alarm reset.
Repairs/replaces venetian blinds and other items on windows such as locking devices, latches etc.
Repair furniture such as desks, file cabinets, bookcases, lockers etc.
Replace ceiling tiles, cove base, and floor tile including adjusting ceiling track as necessary.
Perform minor repairs to walls and ceilings such as installation of reinforcement plates or studs, taping and patching of Sheetrock.
Perform repairs to smoke barrier partitions using foam gun or other fire rated material.
Clear sinks and toilets stoppages.
Repair vacuum breakers, faucets, flush valves and other minor repairs involving leaks.
Coordinate all issues that generate leaks, floods or any water exposure with Environmental Service as a joint effort to ensure a rapid response for any associated clean up needed to make a work area safe from falls.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Physical Requirements: Required to climb ladders, reach and lift heavy loads over forty pounds and walk long distances in a regular days work. A great amount of kneeling, bending and climbing stairways is required. Employee must be able to wear safety and protective clothing or equipment prescribed for the work setting.
Working Conditions: At times, incumbent is required to work in areas that are poorly lighted. Will be required to work both inside and outside in all types of weather. Work within areas where clothes and skin can be soiled by grease, dust and steam. Required to work in areas that are noisy, such as pump rooms, areas that are exposed to gases and fumes. Works in all areas of the Medical Center, including contagious disease and/or contaminated areas. Will be provided and is required to wear universal protection items, such as caps, gloves, gowns, masks etc.
