The position serves as a Construction Supervisor for the San Francisco VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS). This position is organizationally located in the Construction Team within Engineering Service and is under the general supervision of the Supervisory Facilities Operations Specialist, with work subject to review for quality, timeliness, completeness and adherence to policies, priorities, project schedules and detailed work plans.
Duties
The position will serve as the Construction Supervisor and will perform as a competent, skilled journeyman. He/she will be responsible for managing a team of construction staff consisting of at least a Work Leader, Electrician, Carpenter, Maintenance Worker, Painter, Pipefitter, and a Health System Specialist.
Major duties and responsibilities include, but not limited to:
Plans and directs the Machine/Electric shop programs by serving as a technical and administrative supervisor over the section exercising full supervisory responsibility over work operations involving the maintenance, repair, modification, renovation, and new construction of various building components.
Assigns work verbally, in writing, through the electronic work order system or through the e-mail system and outlines general objectives and scope of work, and provides information on related work and planning, but the employee is relied on to independently handle many of the unprecedented technical problems without assistance.
Acts as a technical advisor, subject matter expert, regarding the operation, effectiveness, maintainability, serviceability, and utilities, space, and environmental requirements of equipment, including their interrelationships with other equipment and the physical plant.
Independently determines the nature of the trouble and extent of building and/or repairs necessary down to the component level.
Actively and continually develops, maintains, and applies up-to-date knowledge ability and skills through on-the-job training and experience.
May be required to become familiar with some of the basic functions, procedures, methods and skills of other related work functions and assist in these functions in the absence of personnel, to the extent of the employee's capabilities.
Responsible for maintenance, troubleshooting, modification, calibration, overhaul, adjustment, test, repair, and preventive maintenance of all construction equipment.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, May also include evening and weekend

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work is performed both inside and outside. Incumbent may be required to make modification and installation in bad weather; in work areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty, and greasy; on scaffolding or cranes at heights of 30 or more feet; manholes of 30 feet deep, and occasionally exposed to the possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, burns, and rotary devices such as electrical motors. Incumbent are frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises and occasionally work in areas requiring the use of respirators.
Construction Team usually perform work inside well lighted, ventilated, and heated areas. Floors are sometimes uneven, oily, and slippery. Occasionally, work is performed in all types of weather. Construction Team are frequently exposed to moving objects and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts and bruises. They frequently climb ladders and work from high places. Dirt, grease, and dampness are frequently encountered.
