You will serve as a PIPEFITTER LEADER in the PIPE SHOP (CODE 956), PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will ensure protective equipment is worn, all safety practices and good housekeeping rules are followed. You will recommend assignments of personnel to ensure skills training is optimized, using current ships availability and schedule. You will instruct and advise students who appear to be falling behind in level of proficiency, suggest how improvement can be made, and report disciplinary problems to shop Supervisors. You will efficiently relay supervisory instructions to other workers assigned to the task or project. You will work with other workers, setting the pace and demonstrating proper work methods.

Requirements

  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • *MINIMUM 2 YEARS EXPERIENCE IN SHIPBOARD PIPEFITTING WORK.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO LEAD OR SUPERVISE: *MINIMUM 2 YEARS EXPERIENCE IN SHIPBOARD PIPEFITTING WORK. *Ability to instruct on proper work procedures and methods, use of tools, and safety pertaining to shop trade skills. *Directing crews to set up for various evolutions such as ship arrivals, docking, undocking, and berthing requirements. *Interpreting blueprints, sketches, drawings, technical instructions, and work orders to complete assigned tasks. *Ensuring the Supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, and time schedules are met. *Making sure all materials, tools, software, and equipment are available to the crew to accomplish assignments.
