This position is in the Office of the Assistant Director (OAD), Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic (SBE) Sciences. The primary purpose of the position is to develop and implement a strategy to communicate information about the Directorate's support of research and education. Duties

As a Communications Specialist, you will perform the following duties: Leads the planning, development, implementation and tracking of internal and external communications activities related to the full range of SBE programs, to enhance understanding of SBE programs Analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness and efficiency of communications needs of the Directorate and makes key recommendations concerning the best techniques to accomplish goals. Works with senior leadership of SBE to develop and implement strategic communications plans for internal and external communities as a technical authority in the field. Develops and executes new strategies and processes to expand and refresh communications products for dissemination through the SBE website and other venues, tracks status and performs research as needed to keep the Assistant Director and senior leadership informed of progress, milestones, or activities warranting additional attention. In coordination with OLPA, identifies areas in which public and internal briefings are desirable, develops themes and delivery methods as an expert in the field. Develops a wide range of oral, written, and on-line materials concerning SBE activities and initiatives, including briefing notes and presentations for SBE executives. Reviews the organization, length, and tone of materials, edits documents to improve clarity, formatting, and grammar, and assists with design and graphics. Develops relationships and partnerships necessary to ensure a consistent message regarding SBE activities; establishes rapport with continuously changing stakeholders and associates. Manages content oversight of the SBE Internet home page to include the design and maintenance of the website to support mission strategies and goals relative to external communications. Utilizes state-of-the-art information technologies, web-based applications, and social media techniques and tools to disseminate information and communications on SBE programs and activities in coordination with OLPA. Coordinates with all pertinent functional groups to include SBE staff and the Communications Team, OLPA, and other NSF Directorates.

Qualifications

To qualify at the GS-14 level, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level in federal service organization developing, implementing, and managing integrated communication strategies and products to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) research to a variety of audiences and stakeholders. Examples of experience include: planning, leading, and managing outreach and communication strategies concerning subjects related to the social, behavioral and/or economic sciences; writing and editing press releases, articles and other written communication materials; utilizing social media and the internet to share organizational information; developing and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders; and providing authoritative advice to senior management for improving the delivery of program information. Experience refers to paid/unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) & other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, & skills & can provide valuable training/experience that translates directly to paid work. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Education may enhance skills required for this position; however, no substitution of education for specialized experience may be made at this level.
