The General Medicine Service a large patient care service within a large, tertiary care complex, VA Medical Center with inpatient management along with consults and referrals from various other subspecialty and surgical services within the institution.
Duties
Responsible for all functions which fall under the scope of care of a Primary Care Provider. These include predominantly clinical and administrative management, either directly or through delegated authority of the following:
-Initial patient evaluation
-Management of acute and chronic medical conditions in an outpatient setting:
-Follow up care post treatment
-Consultation with other services as needed
-Optimizing patient safety and quality
Customer Service:
-Relationships with management, co-workers, patients, and general public are consistently courteous, respectful and cooperative in nature.
-Incumbent will display a cooperative attitude and will effectively work together to implement the organization's mission and goals.
-Incumbent will ensure productivity is maintained at the established level for the position for which he/she is responsible.
Computer Security:
-Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive office data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, Federal regulations, VA statutes and policy, and VHA policy. Protects the data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion. Follows applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc.
-Uses word processing software to execute several office automation functions such as storing and retrieving electronic documents and files: activating printers; inserting and deleting text, formatting letters, reports, and memoranda; and transmitting and receiving e-mail. Uses the Veterans Health Information and Technology Architecture (VistA) and the Computerized Patient Records System (CPRS) to access information in the Medical Center Computer System.
Supervisory Controls:
-The Primary Care Provider, Medicine Service Line (MSL), Primary Carefeports to the Associate Chief, MSL, Primary Care, Hines, Chief, Medical Service, Chief of Staff, and Medical Center Director. Functions locally as a team member of the Medicine Service Line.
Environment Of Care
-Follows Life Safety Management (fire protection) procedures. Reports safety hazards, accidents and injuries. Reviews hazardous materials/Safety Data Sheets (SDS)/waste management. Follows Emergency Preparedness plan. Follows security policies/procedures. Complies with federal, state and local environmental and other requirements preventing pollution, minimizing waste, and conserving cultural and natural resources.
Infection Control
-Demonstrates infection control practices for disease prevention (i.e. hand washing, universal precautions/isolation procedures, including TB requirement/precautions.
Qualifications
The Primary Care Provider will provide primary care, to include Women's health care, for a panel of approximately 1200 patients at the Hines VA main campus. Work will include off tour hours including weekdays and rotating weekends.
Incumbent works collaboratively with primary care staff for clinical care and performance projects. Incumbent will participate and maintain clinical and educational activities, including women's health care, within Primary Care/General Medicine at Hines to stay grounded and relevant in the role. Must be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Internal Medicine.

Optimizing patient safety and quality
Education
Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
- Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
- Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
- For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.]
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
