This position is open to National Park Service (NPS) current permanent employees on a competitive appointment and employees that meet Land Management Authority.
Duties
Inspect National Park Service vessels to make sure required safety equipment is in proper condition and meets current NPS and Coast Guard regulations.
Coordinate ATON activities with the U.S. Coast Guard in recommending additions and/or deletions to the system, procuring supplies, discussing new aids techniques, and assessing the navigational aids program.
Provide leadership to skilled craftsmen, certified divers, and related technical support for the Aids to Navigations system (ATONS).
Ensure all dive team members are qualified and certified as to training and depth requirements.
Inspect structures to assure that connection details, flotation units, and anchoring systems are properly maintained.
Work from blueprints, sketches, and general verbal instructions.
Operate motor winches, cable handling equipment, cutting, and welding equipment, and power hand tools such as saws, drills, grinders, etc.
Utilize knowledge of proper hazardous materials handling and disposal practices and applicable section of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.
Area/Housing Information: This position is located at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, on the Arizona-Utah border. Qualifications
To qualify, there is no specific length of training or experience required; however, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to show your ability to perform the duties of a Maintenance Mechanic (Dive Lead) without more than normal supervision. Examples of such experience include: (1) providing leadership to skilled craftsmen, certified divers, and related technical support for the Aids to Navigation system; (2) operating and repairing deep sea remotely operated equipment such as Remotely Operated Vehicles, Side Scanning Sonar, and Sector Scanning Sonar; (3) training, instructing, and certifying all members of a Dive Team; (4) operating motor winches, cable handing equipment, cutting and welding equipment, and power hand tools such as saws, drills, grinder, etc.
SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position has a Selective Placement Factor (screen-out) which will be used to determine minimum qualifications for this position. Applicants not possessing this Selective Placement Factor prior to entry on duty date. The Selective Placement Factor is: Possess an Open Water Dive Certification qualified to dive to at a minimum of 100 feet. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by entry on duty date will receive no further consideration for this position

Physical Effort: Requires stamina to sit for long periods of time while operating vehicles, equipment and boats. Incumbent must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry a variety to tools and equipment, sometimes lifting objects up to 75 pounds. Must be able to do considerable walking, standing, bending, kneeling, stretching, climbing, crawling, and swimming. Works from boat decks, rough terrain in positions that require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
Work Environment: Work is performed inside and outside in all kinds of weather, with temperatures ranging from 100 degrees (F) in the summer to 0 degrees (F) in winter. Is required to work under steep banks as well as rocky slopes. Works around water and must be able to swim and must wear a personal floatation device when required. May work in confined spaces and may be exposed to fuels, greases, oils and other lubricants; and paint and solvent fumes; extremely dusty conditions and other environmental conditions. May operate vehicles and boats in stormy conditions, including high winds. Works with and around power driven tools and hand tools. Personal protective equipment is available and required when appropriate. May be required to fly as a passenger in light aircraft.

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
