About the Position: Serves as an Environmental Protection Specialist with the Directorate of Public Works (DPW), which provides infrastructure, engineering resources, housing and facility management support and services incorporating sustainable development. It's DPW's mission to ensure the long-term viability of the installation's ability to support the military commanders and joint base community, advancing environmental stewardship, community relations and quality of life.
Duties
Maintain technical services to multiple research laboratories, tenants and Garrison facilities to collect, receive, transport, repackage, store, and properly disposal of Hazardous Waste (HW) and Hazardous Material (HM).
Perform accurate waste determinations on highly toxic laboratory chemicals.
Review and evaluate customer processes to characterize the structure, use, compatibility, condition, health hazard, reactivity, and spill precautions of Hazardous Waste (HW) and Hazardous Material (HM).
Perform weekly inspections on the Hazardous Waste and Hazardous Material management.
Implement and comply with environmental regulations.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent to complete Department of Transportation (DOT/Environmental Protection Agency (EPA/Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) refresher training within six (6) months of employment.
- This position requires the incumbent to complete the Department of Defense Transportation of Hazardous Waste 40-hour certification with six (6) months.
- 24-hour RCRA training must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual medical surveillance thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness perform the duties of the position.

In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Assisting with inspection of hazardous materials/waste disposal, transport, or storage operations to ensure compliance with environmental laws/regulations; 2) providing routine technical assistance to personnel in the handling and disposal of hazardous materials/waste to eliminate potential or existing hazards or violations; and 3) participating in the development of environmental assessments/impact statements and/or guidance. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the Federal service (GS-09).

Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or L.L.M in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as environmental law, biology or ecology. Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
