The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in Office of Education & Experience, Division of Public History, National Museum of American History (NMAH), Under Secretary for Museum & Culture, Smithsonian Institution (SI). The Office of Education and Experience supports NMAH’s mission by planning, developing, and implementing a wide range of educational programs and experiences.

Duties

The purpose of this Assistant Director (Education & Experience) position is to oversee the daily operations and supervision of staff of the Education and Experience Department, shaping and leading approaches that yield maximum impact and benefit to advance the museum’s mission and goals.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications (1701 series): Degree: that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position. OR Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described in A above. In addition to the basic qualification requirement above: Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal Service.  For this position, specialized experience is defined as 1) Managing education and audience experience in a museum and/or cultural institution; 2) Leading a multi-disciplinary team of educators and/or experience developers; 3) Developing, implementing, evaluating, and refining public programs; and 4) Establishing criteria and written guidelines for educational and audience-centered experiences.Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.
