The primary purpose of this position is to perform advanced thermal spray process skills to assist the shop work leader and supervisor to accomplish the complex projects of various metalizing or flame spray process and maintenance operations.
Duties
Operates the thermal spray equipment to build up surfaces of prototype, experimental, and applied research hardware items with thermal, erosion, or corrosion barriers, using highly specialized coatings of metals, alloy, refractory materials, etc.
Ensures needed plans, blueprints, schematics, materials, and equipment are available when needed.

Sets up and operates equipment. Mounting article to be coated and adjusting controls to achieve desired temperature, gas and powder flow, and other conditions.
Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations to maintain a safe and clean work environment.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-3700 Metal Processing Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is Ability to do the work without normal supervision.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is usually performed in areas that are adequately lighted, ventilated and heated and safety controlled. Required to use safety equipment such as leather gloves, ear plugs and safety eyewear, due to the danger from burns and metal particles; cuts from sharp object edges. Eye strain from flames and heated metal. Required to abide by established safety procedures in the performance of duty. Work in high noise area of 85 decibels or above.
