Duties

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for litigation support, with emphasis on facilitating discovery in civil cases in compliance with the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, especially those provisions and amendments addressing electronic discovery (e-Discovery). Utilizing automated litigation software applications and other resources to organize, review, analyze and compile information for use by Assistant United States Attorney (AUSAs) in the litigation of a variety of civil cases. Typical work assignments will include: Providing technical assistance to AUSAs in facilitating the management of incoming and outgoing document discovery in accordance with electronic discovery and other procedural requirements. Utilizing a variety of Automated Litigation Support (ALS) soft ware applications to locate, organize, analyze, characterize and present information that is pertinent to the government's position in cases. Assisting AUSAs in trial preparation by organizing and processing voluminous case information for retrieval through automated means such as scanning, indexing and organizing documents in a database. Assisting AUSAs in developing clear and effective presentations for use in legal proceedings. Providing a full-range of legal support to assigned AUSAs. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable
  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.

Qualifications

GS-9: To be eligible at the GS-9 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below: Specialized Experience, OR Education, OR a combination of Education and Experience. Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-7 level work. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped you with the competencies needed to perform the job duties. Examples of such experience are: recommending automated support methods for litigation and trials; customizing databases and programs for user needs in litigation; using automated resources and technology for the development, presentation, and litigation of cases (i.e., document management software, digital imaging applications, optical character recognition tools, graphic design software, audio visual equipment, and trial presentation programs); loading, tagging, researching, or maintaining documents in document review platforms typical of legal practice; assisting with trial preparation and presentations; preparing motions, orders, pleadings, subpoenas and legal briefs, and pre-trial documents. Education: One of the following types of education in a related field: master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university. Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 1 full year. Selective Placement Factor: A selective placement factor is determined to be essential for successful performance in this position. Those candidates who do not meet the following selective placement factor will be rated "not qualified" for the position. Applicants must have experience with the processing, searching, tagging and production of electronically stored information (ESI) and the use of document review applications that involve assisting attorneys in civil cases. Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
