Duties

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for financial litigation support in our Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section of the Criminal Division. This position functions as a Financial Litigation Specialist. Typical work assignments will include: Reviews, summarizes, and outlines financial situation of the debtor; and makes a recommendation and prepares filings for attorney review on the most appropriate legal action and priority of the collection. Performs all functions to collect amounts imposed as a result of the prosecution of criminal cases and in civil collection cases. Monitors the progress of all assigned collection cases and initiates actions to increase recoveries including asset investigation and ensuring that legal pleadings, forms, reports, correspondence, and other documents are prepared and submitted within established deadlines. Conducts interviews of debtors, employers, and agency officials to determine the effectiveness of pursuing legal action against debtors in default. Serves as point of contact in collection matters for internal and external partners, including client agencies, the Clerk of Court and U.S. Probation, as well as Administrative staff for purposes of monitoring Internal Controls. Periodically provides reports of financial litigation team's financial activities to assigned attorneys, coordinator, and supervisors for their review and consideration as to the goals and outcomes of debt collection and enforcement activities. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable
  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.

Qualifications

GS-9: To be eligible at the GS-9 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below: Specialized Experience, OR Education, OR a combination of Education and Experience. Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-7 level work. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped you with the competencies needed to perform the job duties. Examples of such experience are: initiating contact with debtors concerning payment of their obligations and their ability to pay; negotiating written payment schedules to assure successful collection of debts; reviewing debtor's assets; using collection data to determine strategies for collection; and participating in decisions concerning post judgment remedies such as garnishments. Education: One of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Law, Finance): a Master's or equivalent graduate degree (such as an LL.B. or J.D.); OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position. Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 1 full year. Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
