This position is located within the Maintenance and Operation Section of the VA Northern California Health Care System in McClellan Park, CA.
Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
Maintains repairs and operates air conditioning refrigeration equipment.
Performs limited functions relative to plumbing and electrical maintenance.
Performs journeyman level duties on air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, air handling units, air compressors, pumps and other miscellaneous equipment.
Performs visual examinations and operational tests of aforementioned equipment; starts and stops equipment.
Takes readings of pressures and temperatures shown on various gauges and enters data in operating logs.
Takes readings of cooling tower water and adds chemicals to prevent algae and scaling of tubes; checks temperature and humidity readings to ensure conditions are correct for operating rooms and makes proper adjustments.
Performs repair and maintenance such as replacing worn or defective belts; dissembles and reassembles compressor heads, connecting rods, crank shafts, piston rings, bearings, bushings; overhauls valves and seals, and diaphragms.
Installs complete air conditioning systems with supply and exhaust for critical areas such as computer rooms.
Performs the duties of a maintenance electrician, on the entire electrical power and control system, some electronic and programmable systems (energy management system) as well as electrical controlled pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
Assignments include periodic preventive maintenance inspections, test, and repairs on the above
mentioned plumbing systems.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Physical demands are arduous and require a high degree of ability as well as long periods of standing, bending, sitting and squatting. Individual may be required to carry material up to 50 lbs.
Works indoors and outdoors, on elevated structures, and in cramped areas. Subject to discomfort from face masks and/or other protective devices when there is a possibility of exposure to toxic refrigerants, noxious gases, fumes or acids. Employee is exposed to the dangers of moving equipment, energized electric circuits, sharp metal edges, and toxic fumes while performing the duties of the position, Exposure to electrical conductors, moving objects, sharp edges, etc., may occur along with danger to cuts, bums, and respiratory ailments. Typical safety equipment required by the trade are safety shoes, safety glasses and hard hats.
