About the Position: Serves as a Security Guard for the National Museum of the United States (NMUSA). Performs a full range of duties to include performing various aspects of enforcing rules and regulations governing traffic control, parking, building or other facility access, and physical security breaches.
Duties
Inspect containers, personal property, documents on private, commercial, and governmental vehicles.
Perform security guard duties in accordance with appropriate regulations to detect and prevent theft, damage, accident, trespass, sabotage and espionage and to enforce the security and safety regulations of the installation.
Question suspicious persons and warns or detains violators of laws, regulations, policies, rules or posted warnings.
Conduct foot or vehicle patrol of perimeters, roadways, parking and other high traffic areas as well as interior of shops, storage, administrative and other structures.
Conduct vehicle searches/inspections in accordance with standing operating procedures.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Shift work is required, or a change in work shift may be necessary. Hours of work encompass fluctuating tours of duty to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
- Incumbent must be proficient in the use of assigned firearms/weapons, pass an initial qualification, and must qualify semi-annually thereafter in the use of assigned firearms/weapons.
- Incumbent must successfully complete CPR certification.
- Incumbent will be required to pass entry level and annual re-certification of standard Army physical fitness/agility test (PAT) in accordance with Army Regulation 190-56.
- Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
- This position requires wearing a uniform and or protective clothing.
- This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.
- This position is covered by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program. Incumbent must pass urinalysis testing, as required prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
- Incumbent must be able to pass initial and annual medical examinations.
- This position is designated as mission essential. Incumbent may be required to remain on duty or report for duty during severe weather or other installation closings.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Duties require good physical agility and moderate physical exertion, including long or recurring periods of standing, walking, running, bending, stooping, reaching and climbing stairs, when responding to alarms or calls for assistance, patrolling the facility, or restricting individual's access. This level of physical agility and exertion, combined with physical dexterity and strength, are required in pursuing, apprehending, and detailing uncooperative suspects. Work is accomplished by walking through buildings, parking areas, assisting personnel, and possible physical altercations with individuals. Wearing an equipment belt holding a weapon, ammunition, police club, hand irons, flashlight and other required items could create an additional 20 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, such as adverse weather conditions during extended periods of traffic and patrol duties. The incumbent may be required to use protective clothing or gear during assigned duties. The work involves moderate risks requiring exercise of safety precautions when working around hazardous materials. The work also involves moderate risk and discomfort when working outdoors without shelter or operating vehicles for extended periods of time over rough terrain when doing patrols.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes detection and prevention of theft, damage, and/or trespassing, performing vehicle searches, confiscating unauthorized items, directing traffic flow, verifying identification and controlling access to premises.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
