The position is in the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), within the Eastern Oklahoma VA Health Care System and in Pathology and Laboratory Medical Service (P&LMS) at the Ernest Childers VA Health Care Center (THCC). The incumbent serves as a Program Support Assistant (PSA) performing a wide range of administrative, clerical, and technical duties common to the laboratory service.
Duties
The duties of the Program Support Assistant may include, but are not limited to the following:
Reviewing test requests
Checking to verify provider orders are in the system
Processing orders
Verifying patient information to include positive identification of patients and specimens
Contacting clinic personnel in correcting or verifying requests
Placing orders if patient arrives with no orders per provider request
Monitoring outpatients waiting to have specimens drawn. Making sure patients are not waiting too long for blood draw. Managing workflow of the draw area.
Following up with appropriate personnel within the various services of the medical center when
corrections are needed
Receiving all laboratory specimens from patients and other services within the facility
Ensuring the clerical workflow effectively supports the needs of the clinic and make necessary
adjustments
Work Schedule: 7:30am - 4:00pm Monday -Friday

Qualifications

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Ability to operate computerized programs and databases to enter, modify and retrieve sensitive information/data into or from electronic medical records, verify laboratory orders in electronic scheduling systems and/or reports. Knowledge of basic medical terminology. Ability to work independently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of duties, including setting priorities and coordinating work. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond combination of specialized experience and education beyond the first 60 semester hours (i.e. beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. The education portion must include courses directly related to the work of this position.
Preferred Experience: Prefer applicants to know basic medical terminology related to the laboratory. Demonstrate customer service skills. Some basic phlebotomy skills.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work requires manual dexterity, visual acuity, regular and often continual physical exertion.
